Who is the artist? (Artist statement, part 3)

satsumaart 28 March 2012 12 Comments

What is the role of the artist? To make the best art? No! To develop the most complete, original expression of your experience. Note: this is a process, whereas the other is an end product. The actual artistic outputs are just by-products of the artist's goal. The important part is still the process.

how did you make those cool background dots/splotches where part is more saturated than the rest? it gives a cool “depth” effect.

Glad you like it! It’s just a brushmark — to make the dot/splotch shape, I press down harder with my first touch (which leaves a good bit of paint that dries to make the darker color), then pull it away gently (which leaves the trail of less wet, more diluted paint that dries lighter). I like the effect too. Some of the dots make me think of jellybeans. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks, Rachel! It is a flowchart, huh? I didn’t consciously think of that when making it, but you’re right — and I love flowcharts. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you! I appreciate it. It took me a long time to decide this was how I felt about being a writer and artist, and now it’s useful knowledge and motivation.

Oh. My. God. I love this. I missed the first two days, so I had the benefit of getting to see all three at once, rather than waiting on pins and needles for the next day’s post (although I’m already eager to see day four). ๐Ÿ˜‰ This is so beautiful and inspiring!

Ahhh, thank you, Mayumi — I mean Mo! ๐Ÿ˜‰ (Not that it wouldn’t be a complete honor to have Mayumi read my blog! ๐Ÿ˜‰ And how exciting to learn her last name.) Hope day four lives up to the pins and needles. ๐Ÿ˜‰ It’s my personal favorite so far!

Oops. I just realized that I signed in with the wrong gravatar, so it looks like Mayumi’s reading your blog today instead. ๐Ÿ˜‰
