Happy October! Welcome, divine beauties, to Open Mic Friday! Every week we have a featured “reading” in the body of this post. Applause and other feedback go in the comments, where you’re also welcome to share your own work. The comments are threaded, which means you can reply directly to each reader by hitting the “reply” button within that comment box.
Read, share, and converse!
This week it gives me great pleasure to share our very first visual guest post. This painting, and its description, come from my old friend Alison Higuera. I’ve known her since middle school and am deeply honored to share her work in this space.
Matters of the Heart by Alison Higuera
Matters of the heart are not always pretty. They’re complicated. For me? They’re difficult to put into words.
They are rich in layers of experiences. Dig a little deeper and you will discover beauty and richness you never even knew existed.
Some areas are hardened and scarred by past hurts.
They’ve been painted on over and over again – pushed to the back.
Maybe, if I cover them well enough, they’ll go away.
Maybe nobody will notice them. Maybe I won’t notice them anymore.
But, what if I let my heart be pierced?
By the power of forgiveness, the power of healing, the power of the Holy Spirit?
The scars are washed over, brought into the light.
Look at them. They’re fragile and delicate. Handle with care.
They have new life. They become the new landscape, that takes over the old.
New matter in my heart.
Alison Higuera is an artist and new mom living in Houston, TX. She blogs at higuerita.wordpress.com. (And she’s moving house tomorrow, so send her some energetic vibes!!)
Thank you, Alison, for sharing. And now — the comments are open. Go!
