This week it gives me great pleasure to share our very first visual guest post. This painting, and its description, come from my old friend Alison Higuera. I’ve known her since middle school and am deeply honored to share her work in this space.
Matters of the Heart by Alison Higuera
Matters of the heart are not always pretty. They’re complicated. For me? They’re difficult to put into words.
They are rich in layers of experiences. Dig a little deeper and you will discover beauty and richness you never even knew existed.
Some areas are hardened and scarred by past hurts.
They’ve been painted on over and over again – pushed to the back.
Maybe, if I cover them well enough, they’ll go away.
Maybe nobody will notice them. Maybe I won’t notice them anymore.
But, what if I let my heart be pierced?
By the power of forgiveness, the power of healing, the power of the Holy Spirit?
The scars are washed over, brought into the light.
Look at them. They’re fragile and delicate. Handle with care.
They have new life. They become the new landscape, that takes over the old.
New matter in my heart.

thanks, Mo! I have been admiring your mouse market creations from afar for a while. I am always amazed at the attention to detail and intricacies in your tiny creations!

Alison,
Your painting is exquisite, and I am very moved by your words. These days, especially, I very much identify with wanting to transform the scars into something more. When I was younger I also just wanted to get rid of them, but now I realize that they are part of who I am. If I am ever beautiful, that beauty will coexist with every wound. They heal, they fade, but they don’t disappear. Thank you for sharing your work.
