I’m looking back over this day and it just feels unknowable. What did I do today? I got up and wrote my morning pages while Erik took Tisha to the vet, and that’s all I remember from the morning: worrying about Tisha. Biopsy results tomorrow, we hope… fingers crossed! Then I went to dance class, followed by lunch with Bright and a round of crafting-related errands (Depot for Creative Reuse, library, Thrift Town)… all this feels blurry too; lunch and post-dance tiredness combined with the unusual warmth of the day made the whole afternoon feel like a lazy, sleepy, lethargic haze.
In the late afternoon, I put on some playlists from the dance studio to perk me up, then started doggedly working my way through my crafting books and clippings. This proved unexpectedly fun, because I got to try something completely different.
At some point during my garage and estate sale frenzy last spring,
I picked up a big box of random sewing supplies. Inside it, amid zippers, hand needles of all sizes, and a plastic belt buckle, I found a metal wheel thing with mean-looking retractable spokes. I figured it was some kind of vintage tracing wheel that I would never learn how to use, but I stashed it away just in case. About a week ago, I was cutting up a recent issue of Martha Stewart Living for decoupage scraps, when an article caught my eye. It said I could use a 70s-era infomercial implement called the Knitwit to make beautiful yarn rosettes. I glanced at the photo of the Knitwit, and it looked familiar… today I dug out the vintage metal wheel thing, and sure enough, it’s a Knitwit!
As a non-knitter, I don’t have a whole lot of yarn sitting around the house, but luckily Jinny included some with her destash supplies a couple of months ago. So I got it out and applied myself to the Knitwit, and made a few awkward rosettes. Exciting! Knitwit use seems to be one of those things that’s not hard but just gets a lot smoother with practice, so I’m looking forward to embellishing lots of my clothing with knitwitted rounds. Alas — I now have an excuse to buy yarn. Noooo!! I’ve held off for so long!!
It’s still strangely warm here, but I’m staying awake with more dance tunes, and working on a hand-embroidered brooch for the Craft Happy inventory (I got an idea from one of my library craft books).
Oh! And one more thing. I found a 25¢ McCall’s sewing guide in the booksale section of the library today. It’s a little old, but it looks very serviceable, especially for deciphering patterns and making garments. I don’t think I’ll have much time to look through it before Craft Happy, but when I do, I’ll let you know how it is!
[…] I pass them on by donating them to the thrift store, and sometimes I hang on to them. In one memorable instance, I kept a strange implement that turned out to be the handy little Knitwit tool. The fun thing […]
