There’s a bird chirping deafeningly outside our kitchen door, and the kitties are remarkably nonchalant about it. Tisha did rush at it, but only after it had flown away and come back again.
Today I:
-packaged and sent a PaperbackSwap book
-enjoyed an almost-private yoga class with a teacher named Rosy, whose husband David’s class I went to yesterday (so nice to do yoga two days in a row again!)
-visited a nursery and bought potting soil
-visited a salvage yard
-picked up our book club book from the library
-had non-instant ramen for lunch (liquid egg yolks are so ambrosial over noodles!!)
-booked tickets for our August trip to Ithaca, to give Al the grand send-off (Cornell is so far!!! ๐ฆ )
-figured out what to wear to Angela and Alex’s wedding (shopped my closet, as the fashion magazines are so fond of saying)
-cut some more collage scraps, to the extreme detriment of my right hand
-improvised a slaw to go with Erik’s fried tilapia for a very tasty dinner
-moved all our yard-sale plant pots from the garage to the deck (no small feat, since there are stairs involved and the pots are heavy terra-cotta)
-planted seeds for: red Russian kale, cavolo nero, collards, bronze leaf lettuce, mizuna, lingue de canario (sp?) lettuce, purple carrots, cilantro, rainbow chard, purple bush beans, and butterfly-attracting flowers
-added some kitchen scraps and dryer lint to our composter
None of these things took that much time — I think the longest task was the hour and a half yoga class — but somehow there went my entire day. I used to fret when I spent a day in this way, doing only “small” tasks and no “serious” work, but now it doesn’t bother me too much. As long as I don’t fritter away the entire week in household maintenance and boring-but-necessaries, I take pleasure in the rhythms of what I do and how they change from day to day. I think having ample fresh air circulating through the house really helps, as does moving around a lot, getting outdoors daily, and varying it up so I never feel like I’m doing the same thing every day. What can I say? I truly enjoy my life. I’m so very grateful and lucky.

Good dog, good dog. I read an article once about how we can encourage ourselves the same way we do our pets. Just tell yourself “good girl to _____!” every time you do something good or want to do something good, like “good girl to do your homework on time!” “good girl to eat all your salad!” and strangely enough, it is kind of encouraging. ๐
