EWWWWWWWWW we just found one of these in the apartment and it was so gross!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Erik dispatched it with a few well-aimed sprays of Simple Green (who knew?), followed by some well-aimed thumps of his composition notebook (oh dear), and a wad of Kleenex. Then he found the above link on Wikipedia so now we know what it was, and that it probably helped keep our apartment free of spiders, roaches, and silverfish. Oops. Well, it was creepy-looking. Next time we will capture it and take it outside, which is what I normally do with insects anyway.
Ewwwww I feel soooo crawly now.
[This post was imported on 4/10/14 from my old blog at satsumabug.livejournal.com. Very recently my youngest sister Al found one of these in her grad-school apartment and sent me a photo freaking out about it. Fortunately she did capture hers and remove it, instead of killing the poor thing!]
how heroic of Erik
Not only did he kill it, he killed it good.
Hahaha. You guys are funny. You kill it, and THEN look it up on wikipedia.
Can’t wait to see you tomorrow! Too bad you’ll miss out on homemade pizza. I guess at least it means we get to put meat on it then. :]
hugs,
Shra
The first time Gregory and I saw one of those in our apartment, we captured it and thought it must be some exotic, rare insect that we would need to take to a specialist. Well, after we looked it up we were pretty disappointed that it had such a common name! 😀 They look so bizarre!
Did you read the Wikipedia entry? It said they’re sometimes sold in pet shops in Japan because people like them! I was just so startled to see it — we rarely get bugs of any sort, much less bugs longer than half a centimeter. Yet somehow today there was that one, and two other beetlelish creatures that found their way into our apartment. I am really hoping this isn’t a trend!
I think it’s the hot weather. We’re having an ant problem (and one roach, which we’d never seen in our apartment before). Augh!
Oh yes I read that entry when it happened! Good luck with the ants!
i think i found about three in my last apt. it’s too bad i didnt know it was such a beneficial bug. i regret killing them now. =(
It seems like I’m the only one who’s new to these things! 🙂
I hope you’re well.
*hugs*
and reporting on bugs from the south…..
we are having lots of bug problems because it has been rainy alll summer long. all summer. until now. so tomorrow we are calling pest control because we have heard a rodent of some sort skitting around in our attic, seen a tree roach fly into our house, and two termites crawl up into our floorboard. NOT A GOOD SIGN. and it’s not like we are that messy! booo……
Re: and reporting on bugs from the south…..
btw – this is alison that just posted 🙂
Re: and reporting on bugs from the south…..
Eek, tree roaches and termites! Good luck with those!
One of the very nice by-products of having kitties is we never have rodent problems… but I can understand you might not be ready to embrace having a cat in your home 😉
