Today was such a fun day. Lots of food involved–but that’s not the only reason it was fun. ๐
First, I turned in a paper this morning, so now I only have one more paper before the end of the semester. A good feeling. Then I talked a little bit about food history with Prof Laqueur after class, then went to another class where we watched an episode of All in the Family. I’d never seen the show before, which is apparently semi-weird, but I thought it was hilarious–not because of the actual comic content, which I thought was mostly annoying, but Jean Stapleton’s character, Edith, is exactly like the housewives depicted in Monty Python’s Flying Circus!
After class, Dana met me and we went to Bongo Burger on Center to have lunch with two people from Ben & Jerry’s, Candelin and Arnold, who are in charge of marketing and flavor development. That was really fun. They bought us lunch and ice cream, and gave us lots of free stuff, in exchange for hearing our ideas about new products. The way I got involved in this is totally random. I’m on Ben & Jerry’s email newsletter, so when they sent out a survey a few weeks ago I filled it out. The next day an outreach person contacted me and asked if I wanted to meet some people of theirs who were coming to the Bay Area. Of course I said yes! Candelin and Arnold were definitely businesspeople, but also very nice and down to earth. It’s nice to find out that at least some of the people who work for Ben & Jerry’s really are as normal as you’d expect B&J people to be. It was fun for us to hear a little bit about the process that goes into marketing B&J flavors, etc, and nice to know we have input. ๐ They took our picture… I wonder if we’ll be on organic sorbet cartons within a year? Hehe.
After we finished talking to them it was already time for my afternoon class, but I was having such a good time I didn’t want to go. So Dana and I wandered around for a bit, taking care of a few things we each had to do, then decided to extend our fun afternoon by hopping a 7 bus and going in search of bread. We were planning to get soda bread at La Farine, but on a whim we also stopped at Bread Garden and picked up cinnamon swirl bread and, for Dana, lots of cookies. Then we walked to La Farine and got apricot walnut soda bread. I think the original soda bread is better, but oh well. Yumyum. We came back laden with baked goodies–and we’d just had ice cream! I love foodies, they’re so much fun to hang out with. ๐ Yay Dana!
