Allergies

Ugh, I’m so tired. Last night I couldn’t get to sleep until after the automated sprinklers went off in the front yard, which I believe is at three am. The problem was our cat Tybalt.

I used to never be allergic to cats–actually wait, I used to never be allergic to anything at all. Somehow, though, once I got to college I developed seasonal allergies and also a slight allergy to cat fur. I’ve heard many people don’t have allergies until they get to this age, so maybe I’m not so weird. But anyway, I started noticing this at the humane society, where the cats are kept in small confined rooms. Since they can only clean cat rooms so much (think about it), the fur always builds up and gets me sneezing. I can never stay there longer than a couple of hours, which annoys me very much.

After discovering this allergy, I was afraid it would be a problem at home with Tibby, but it never seemed to be. He sheds his fur all over the place, but I guess since our house is a much bigger, airier, better-cleaned place than the humane society’s cat rooms, my nose deals with it okay.

Last night the problem was my bed… he likes to sleep in it while I’m gone. In, not on. And since the only place he can get under the covers is at the head of the bed, by my pillows, there’s a lot of his fur on the place where I lay my head at night. It has never bothered me this much before, but who knows what happened this time. At any rate I just couldn’t get comfortable. My nose kept itching and I had this vision of inhaling thousands of fine hairs every time I breathed. Finally I removed the pillowcase and slept on the pillow itself, and that way I was able to fall asleep.

First thing I did when I got up this morning at ten was take off all my sheets and bring them downstairs to the washing machine! And later, if I feel up to it, Tibby is going to get a bath.
