On Friday we went to Santa Cruz to walk along the beach. There was a wonderful path that wound right along the shoreline and as I looked out at the water I realized my ocean poem wasn’t adequate. That is, it is the poem of someone who loves having the ocean nearby, but hasn’t actually been next to it in a while. Real ocean is much bigger and stronger and greater… I don’t think I could write a poem to that. Paint, maybe. But the poem is good for the little ocean-notion in my heart. π
Here’s the real ocean (still seen from the comfort of land, on a calm day!):
Stunning, Lisa! Thanks for sharing a little of the Pacific with us. I bet your fingers were itching to paint! (Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay are where we always went when I was a child in California.)
You’re welcome, Sherry! I love HMB and would love to get to know Santa Cruz better. We always went to Carmel, or later to a place called Sunset Beach which is in Watsonville near all the broccoli and strawberry fields. π
We actually saw someone painting, down on the rocks, and were amused because her entire canvas was covered in orange and yellow and peach colors. I have no idea what she was painting, but it definitely wasn’t a straight representation of the ocean. π
Thanks. I often forget I live so close to the ocean
π I didn’t think I’d miss it so much, but I do! I’m not that far — Santa Cruz was just under an hour’s drive — but we’re in a valley now, so I can’t see nor hear it.
Thanks for the video! It made me homesick for the Atlantic… My family is from Barbados & the sea is my kinda nature. I could never camp ever again a day in my life and be fine. However, without the calm & peace that the ocean brings me, I’d be a wilty flower.
You’re very welcome! You know, I don’t know that I’ve ever properly been to the Atlantic. I went on a cruise once around the Caribbean, but I think that might just have been the Gulf of Mexico — kind of the Atlantic, I guess. I can only imagine how much more you’d love the sea if your family has island roots. π
Neat !
Glad you think so! π
[…] so a lake is not an ocean. A strip of sand on Lake Ontario is not going to be like the coast of Santa Cruz… or the beaches of Marin County…Β or the piers of Santa Monica. But you know what? You […]
