Journey to Ithaca

We’re in Ithaca now, hanging out with Al and parents for a couple of days before Al moves into her dorm at Cornell. Valuable lessons learned from today’s 12 hours in planes and airports:

(1) Sleep deprivation makes it more difficult for me to recognize my body’s other needs (besides sleep) —
(2) such as dehydration,
(3) and hunger/low blood sugar.
(4) Small planes make it easier for me to get motion sickness, especially if I read while on the plane.

Add up #1-4 and you get me, just off the small regional plane from Philly to Ithaca, feeling intensely dizzy (world going up and down, unable to focus or stand up straight without effort) and increasingly nauseated.

Two hours, 32 ounces of water, two soft pretzels with cheese sauce, a salad, a bag of chips, a bowl of soba topped with egg and green onions, and one hard candy later, I am feeling almost normal again, and so thankful for it. I really thought I was going to throw up earlier, and I feared the parents’ fussing and worrying if I did so.

And how cool is it that there’s a Korean market across from our hotel? The soba + egg was a godsend!!
