I am so disturbed. I just made a list of foods I might eat in an average day and looked up their nutritional value. I used product labels where possible and online nutritional tables for other foods, and where applicable overestimated instead of under. I’d been wanting to do this for a long time because I was afraid I might not be getting enough nutrients since I’m not eating meat (except for seafood, though I didn’t put that in my calculations) or drinking milk anymore.
Was I surprised when I’d finished adding up the numbers! I’m taking in too many calories, too much fat, way too much sodium, too much protein, and possibly too much saturated fat. I’m getting enough iron and calcium and all my vitamins. I’m not getting enough carbohydrates, which puzzles me, or enough fiber. This completely disturbs me because I thought I was eating fairly healthily! Moreover, I know my eating habits are more nutritionally sound than most of the American population… what must everyone else’s nutritional intake be like!
Scary! Now I’m wondering if I should just have a big bowl of steamed vegetables for dinner… with maybe some brown rice…
