pigeons

Today Erik and I were walking to my apartment for lunch when we spotted two pigeons. When Erik was younger he used to keep pigeons so he knows a lot about them. I always tease him about it because he sort of becomes his little-kid self when he talks about them, do you know what I mean? Sometimes when you’re talking about something that really says ‘childhood’ to you, you assume the intonation and phrasing of your younger self?

Anyway, there were two pigeons, a male and a female, and they were looking for materials to build a nest. The female was very selective, looking at many little sticks and things, sometimes picking them up and trying how they felt and putting them back again. In the time that we watched them, she didn’t find anything she liked. The male, on the other hand, followed her around as she looked. He had already found a stick he liked, a big useful-looking one, one that probably took up all the space in his beak, so he was already done but was just trailing after her.

‘Can’t you just find one you like and be done already?’
‘No, I don’t like any of these, I’m going to keep looking. Don’t you want to look some more, too?’
‘No, I’ve already found what I was looking for! Let’s go!’

Pigeons are more like people than we might think.
