this is going to be another meat problem

I just got the March issue of one of my favorite magazines, Saveur, today. I was really excited… but when I started flipping through it I encountered a problem. The issue contains a huge article all about lamb, which used to be one of my favorite meats. The problem is the article isn’t about how to cook lamb as much as it is all about where lamb comes from… namely, lambs. So it has all these pictures of fluffy lambs romping through the meadows of New Zealand…

I think I would have had a problem with this article before I stopped eating lamb, but of course there’s no way I can really be sure. Still, though, I think it is a little iffy to be showing so many lambs (and there’s no doubt about it, they’re cute) on one page and showing huge roasts and people happily eating those same lambs on the facing page. Even if that doesn’t gross you out, you have to admit it’s a little weird.

…or maybe it’s better this way? The article describes the way the lambs are raised, which is about as ‘free-range’ as you can get. I guess if people are going to be eating meat they should be prepared for the reality of what’s happening to the animals, and this is the best possible reality for meat animals. Which I guess means I’ve made the right decision for me.
