i just came from yoshi’s in oakland where erik and i watched/listened to cachaíto lópez and other musicians. yoshi’s is a japanese restaurant (as mr dink on doug would say, ‘very expensive!) and jazz house. the jazz house seats 455 but it’s pretty small and very intimate-feeling. although obviously some seats are more desirable than others, all the seats are excellent. space is so tight everyone that each table, which seats four, must be seated to capacity — which meant we shared our table with two strangers. it’s a wonderful atmosphere and the food is okay, if on the expensive side. but cachaíto and the other musicians (especially the trumpet and saxophone people, i thought) were fantastic. toward the end they made everyone get up and dance, which i think we were all itching to do by this time, and it was just really really fun. next time i get the chance i want to go back to yoshi’s. 🙂
interesting thing that happened on the way there: i realized with despair that i had forgotten my student id, which i needed both for the bus (from the bart station to jack london square) and to get the student discount for tickets (which was quite substantial). i figured they’d let me go about the tickets (which they did), but i was dismayed about the unnecessary bus fare. it was not that far a distance. on the way out of the bart station we were wondering aloud where the bus stop was, and this woman heard us and asked if we wanted to take the bus. we said we did, and she offered us her bus transfer pass, which she’d bought but didn’t need. i think we looked really silly because we just couldn’t believe that we’d have this kind of luck/destiny/etc. i mean, to get a free transfer pass just when we needed one… they wouldn’t even put that in a movie, it’s so incredible. very weird. i can’t express how bizarre that was.
